Speaker: Dr. Robin Murphy
Raytheon Professor of Computer Science and Engineering
Texas A&M University
Abstract: Unmanned ground, aerial and marine vehicles have assisted with over 50 disasters in 17 countries. This talk will review these disasters and robots, especially the over two dozen deployments to five countries by the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue. It will focus on the stories of three robots: Bujold, who was at the 9/11 World Trade Center as well as numerous mine disasters; EMILY who is being used to help lifeguards save drowning boat refugees in Greece; and Survivor Buddy, a robot intended to link a survivor with medical personnel. In each case, the robot is part of a human-robot system where people beside the robot are equally important. Extensive video will be shown.
