TOPIC 1 - Free and Open Source Software as an Enabler

Abstract:

The Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) movement was founded over 25 years ago as an alternative methodology for the creation, distribution and ownership of software. From its origins in a few small projects, FOSS has grown in stature and presence to a global movement encompassing technological and social dimensions, and provide a viable alternative to individuals, enterprises and nations. Today, through such software as Android SmartPhone OS, LibreOffice, Java and Ubuntu, FOSS has become virtually mainstream. The presentation examines the history of FOSS, the factors that permitted its growth and the current status.

TOPIC 2 - IT in India: A success story

Abstract:

Among all the developing countries, India stands unique in creating a niche for itself in the IT revolution that started in the nineties. Today, India has a USD 100-billion IT/ITES industry that employs about 3 million people directly and close to 9 million indirectly. The presentation looks at the drivers that propelled India in the creation of this new sector of its economy, and which keeps its growth at a robust 9% annually.

The Organizing Committee would like to invite all interested parties to attend the the 1st International Information Security Workshop that will be held at the Qafqaz University in June 19 and 20, 2012 and co-organized by the Computer Engineering Department at the Qafqaz University (http://ce.qu.edu.az), BM Technologies (www.bmtech.az), BitDefender (www.bitdefender.com), Lancelot Institute (www.lancelotinstitute.com) and IEEE Computer Society Azerbaijan Chapter (http://chapters.computer.org/azerbaijan).

WORKSHOP STATEMENT:

Today, when cyber infrastructure has affected how we accomplish duties and job, how we get acquainted and communicate, how we teach and learn, how we entertain and spend time, etc. collecting and using personal, financial, governmental information, as well as the importance of protecting that information, is a complex challenge that has legal, business, political and technical ramifications.

The global cyber infrastructure has become the crucial environment for economic prosperity, government efficiency, and national security. At the same time the same environment which provides new inviting opportunities also makes possible new potential risks and threats. Protecting the vital information and critical infrastructure from cyberattacks becomes increasingly difficult and costly mission for governments, corporations, non-profit organizations, and even for citizens. Hacktivism, cyberwar, cyberweapons and their potential threats are becoming a reality.

It's why high education research institutions, governments, businesses, public and private sector partners all together should work to find effective solutions to protect the confidentiality of sensitive information and resilience of national and global cyber infrastructure. We hope that the 1st International Information Security Workshop would be successful example of such cooperation and will serve as a booster of public awareness and understanding of information security issues.
