When: Tuesday 27 FEB 2007
Lunch: On your own
Talk: 11:00 AM
Where: University of Texas - Dallas
ECSS 2.102 ("TI" Auditorium)
Topic: "Recent Developments in Video Coding Standards" (download detail)
Speaker: Dr. Madhukar Budagavi
DSP Solutions R&D Center
Texas Instruments
Abstract: Video compression has been a key enabling technology for a variety of consumer electronics devices and applications such as DVD players, personal media players, digital camcorders, streaming video etc. Video coding standards, which standardize the way in which video data is compressed and used, have played a very important role in bringing economy of scale into these markets and making these devices affordable for the common man. In this talk, we will first briefly study some of the key advances made in video coding standards over the years. We will then cover some recent developments in video coding standards in ISO/IEC (MPEG) and ITU-T.
Bio: Madhukar Budagavi received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station. From 1993-95, he worked at Motorola India Electronics developing DSP software and algorithms for Motorola DSP chips. Since 1998, he has been with DSP Solutions R&D Center, Texas Instruments, Dallas, TX, where he has worked on video coding, multimedia communication protocols, OpenGL ES 3D graphics, computer vision, and image processing. He is currently representing TI at international video coding standards meetings. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and has over 25 publications and one patent.
Directions: See UTD map.
Parking: Visitors need to enter the UTD Campus (see campus map) using University Parkway (the main entrance from Campbell Road) and obtain a free visitor's parking permit from the Visitor Information and Parking (Visitor Info on the Campus Map - small guardhouse). This allows parking in any Visitor's parking spot or Green parking area. Best to park in Lot J (behind the Activity Center - AB on the Campus Map), Lot I (Visitor Parking), or Lot H for visiting the ECS Buildings North ECSN and South ECSS. Metered parking is also available in Lot K just in case no empty spot in Green and Visitor parking lots can be found. For room location, click on ECSN or ECSS on the Campus Map.
