Most graduate engineers in these disciplines would generally answer "No" to this question because the industrial exemption available in state engineering practice laws allows them to work in industry without a Professional Engineer (PE) license. That is, they are not legally required to be licensed. However, we are really asking here whether they need to be licensed from a broader perspective than just the legal one. | Bio: | Dan Wittliff was just elected as National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) President Elect for 2012 - 2013. During his NSPE activities since 1972, he has been honored as 1988 Engineer of the Year, 2001 Distinguished Engineer of the Texas Engineering Foundation, and even served as President of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. Dan is a licensed PE in both Texas and Tennessee and is currently Managing Director of Environmental Services with GDS Associates in Austin, Texas. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and on the Board of Advisors to the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Southern Methodist University (SMU). In 1972, Dan retired from the United States Air Force Reserve at the rank of Colonel. He holds a B.S.M.E. from Southern Methodist University and an M.B.A. from the University of Oklahoma. |
